PAUL MAROON | INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC & PIANO PIECES
If something is sold out here, try Bandcamp. If it’s sold out there too, it’s gone.
Paul Maroon is best known as a founding member of the NYC rock band, The Walkmen, and for helping kick off the big early-aughts NYC post-punk revival with the band, Jonathan Fire*Eater. He is also an accomplished composer, having scored the Oscar-winning documentary, Heaven Is a Traffic Jam on the 405 in 2016. Maroon recorded six highly influential albums with The Walkmen from 2002-2013 before going on an "indefinite hiatus," broken only recently by the world reunion tour and string of sold-out shows in the US & Europe in 2023.
In between, he has collaborated on side projects and notable one-offs with Noah Lennox (Animal Collective, Panda Bear) and Walkmen bandmate, Hamilton Leithauser. And as a solo artist, has recorded two proper albums, Instrumental Music and 13 Short Piano Pieces.
"Instrumental Music & Piano Pieces" from the Dead Currencies label compiles Paul’s two solo releases into one long-player, with many of these tracks being released on vinyl for the first time. Side one is comprised of selections from Instrumental Music, while side two is comprised of selections from 13 Short Piano Pieces, respectively. The tracks comprising the Instrumental Music section were recorded by Paul from 2018-2020, at home in New Orleans and Montreal, and are an experiment in sound, structure and textures that vary, sometimes wildly, from solo guitar and sample-based collages, to full-band recordings, with Paul serving duty on every instrument. While the tracks that make up the Piano Pieces side were recorded in New York in 2023 at the historic Sear Sound by Michael Harris (Lana Del Rey, Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend), using analogue equipment, historic techniques and vintage microphones & tape machines. These recordings find him collaborating with internationally acclaimed pianist, Jenny Lin, herself well known and respected for her close work with Philip Glass on his piano etudes.
D.C. worked with Paul to make specific selections and to arrange the new LP in a way that creates an entirely new listening experience. Even those who may already be familiar with the previous releases will discover an entirely new motif in the resulting work. Front to back, "Instrumental Music & Piano Pieces" makes for an adventurous listen.
Physical formats exist in an edition of 150 and are all hand-packaged and numbered, as always. All music is owned by the artist who made it, we just build little boats.
